A third-year medical student at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (SBMC) in Barishal has died by suicide, reportedly due to overwhelming academic pressure.
The student, Sajib Baroi, from the 50th batch of the Microbiology Department, injected a lethal combination of Clonazepam and Fluoxetine into his veins on the night of 22 May. He was rushed to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) by his classmates and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition. Despite all efforts, he passed away on the afternoon of 24 May while undergoing treatment.
Prior to the attempt, Sajib left a heartbreaking note stating, “I am tired of constantly fighting with myself. I just want some rest. Please forgive me. I couldn’t return the love you gave me.”
His roommate, Suman Halder, shared that Sajib had long been struggling with his studies. “He frequently fell ill due to academic stress. While his peers had completed their MBBS exams and begun internships, Sajib remained stuck in the third year. He developed a severe fear of classes and exams, which eventually pushed him into deep depression.”
Attempts to reach Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman for comments were unsuccessful.
