The administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified its campaign against prominent educational institutions by demanding Harvard University’s records on foreign funding and international ties over the past ten years. The move, announced Friday, is part of a broader effort to scrutinize universities that have become flashpoints in America’s culture wars.

The request comes amid Trump’s continued pressure on universities in response to pro-Palestinian campus protests and institutional support for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, as well as transgender rights. His administration has threatened to withhold federal funding from institutions that do not comply with certain political and cultural positions championed by the former president.

Critics and rights groups have slammed the actions as an assault on academic freedom and free speech, warning that targeting universities for their political climates or international associations sets a dangerous precedent.

“This is a blatant attempt to intimidate academic institutions and silence dissent,” said one free speech advocate, adding that such moves could chill open dialogue on campuses across the country.

Harvard has not yet publicly responded to the records request. The escalating tension highlights the ongoing polarization in the U.S. over issues of identity, global engagement, and freedom of expression in higher education.
