Myanmar’s military government announced on Thursday that it will release 4,893 prisoners as part of a New Year amnesty. According to the junta, the move is intended “to participate in the state-building process, for the peace of mind of the people, and on compassionate grounds.”
Since the 2021 coup, which ended Myanmar’s brief democratic transition, civil rights groups say thousands of protesters and activists have been imprisoned. While such amnesties are common during national holidays or Buddhist festivals, most high-profile political prisoners, including ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, remain behind bars.
